What is There to Do
Dear Future Guest,
Prospective guests frequently ask us what there is to do on and around Madeline Island, and at Coole Park. Depending on your tastes and inclinations, the following should be of some help:
For the Athlete:
Beautiful Robert Trent Jones golf course at Madeline Island Golf Club just across Old Fort Road. Cottage and Guest Room guests at Coole Park can play at “Guest of Member” discount.
- Tennis (several opportunities on the Island)
- Swimming is available at numerous places on the Island, including our own beach, heated pool downtown (we belong), and beaches at Joni’s Beach downtown and the State and Town Parks at Big Bay.
- Hiking (trails provided by both parks and the Madeline Island Wilderness Preserve)
- Sailing (charters available both captained and bare boat)
- Biking (bring your own, or rent them in downtown (mopeds also available))
- Kayaking (bring your own, use our beach, instruction and rental available on the Island in downtown)
Canoeing (bring your own and use our beach, or rent them at the Town Park)
- Shuffleboard, croquet, and bocce ball are available on the grounds at Coole Park.
For the Heritage Buff:
- Historic Marker on Highway 13, south of Bayfield
- Historic Downtown LaPointe Walking Tour
- Old Fort Site Marker
- Madeline Island Heritage Center in downtown LaPointe (group of historically significant buildings)
- Madeline Island Museum (run by the Wisconsin State Historical Society)
- Bayfield Heritage Museum
- Native American historic burial grounds
For the Fishermen and Boater:
Bring your own boat, use our dock and fish the shallows for walleye (if you plan to bring a boat and use our dock, please call to make advance arrangements)
- Sport fishing charters available in Bayfield and on the Island (some will pick you up at our dock)
- Drop a line from our dock
For the Photographer, Bird Watcher, and Wildlife Enthusiast:
- Sunsets from our dock
- Sunrise at the lagoon in the Town Park
Travel the Island's roads at dusk for your views of deer, fox, raccoon, and the occasional bear
For the Serious Shopper:
- Specialty shops abound on the Island and in Bayfield (check Madeline Island's and Bayfield's web sites for specifics)
- A trip to Cornucopia will provide charming shops around the harbor
- If you're a WalMart addict, then Ashland is your place
For you Couch Potatoes:
- Take a beach chair to our dock or beach
- Satellite TV in your cabin
- DVD’s and videos are available at several locations in town.
For all of you for whom vacation time is also the time to pursue personal growth, Madeline Island offers the following cultural organizations and activities:
- Madeline Island Museum presents arts and artifacts relating to the rich and diverse history of the Island.
- The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore – Noted by National Geographic Traveler as the nations #1 most pristine national park.
- The Madeline Island Heritage Center – Created and maintained by the Madeline Island Historical Preservation Association, this collection of historic buildings and Island artifacts is just a block off of Main Street on Colonel Woods Avenue (the web site is coming).
- The Madeline Island School of the Arts – Offering three- and five- day workshops in the visual and fiber arts.
- Madeline Island Wilderness Preserve is a non-profit land trust dedicated to the protection and preservation of natural areas on Madeline Island.
- The Madeline Island Music Camp offers serious young musicians the highest level of training in the art of chamber music with numerous performing opportunities.
- LaPointe Center Art Guild and Gallery – Supporting local area artists with grant funding and gallery space hosting a variety of art every season (The gallery is in downtown on Middle Road and the web site is coming).
Off-Island Experiences can include tours of the Islands aboard the Island Princess, and stage shows and reviews at the Big Top Chautauqua, among others.
Dining on the Island has something for everyone's tastes. Restaurants run the gamut from pizza and burgers to fine dining and everything in between.
